Dave:
Exactly.
Parmdeep:
You’re different.
Dave:
That is also fine. I don’t think you’re a corporate ogre, Deep, at any stretch. You’ve got balance but you are very driven. These people like Dell that start up these companies and they say, “I’m going to be the biggest computer business in the world.” I think like that and I think, “You could be.”
Dave:
You could take this below market value business model and you could be the biggest in the world or you could be happy just achieving something that you’re really proud of…
Parmdeep:
Yes.
Dave:
… and enjoy life along the way.
What I’m most enjoying at the moment is it’s providing me with the lifestyle that I want. I could always have a little bit more money but then I’ll spend it but at the moment I’m free. I haven’t got it all yet.
I’m still driving around in a second-hand car but I could afford to get a new one if I wanted to. But the money is there and I’m thinking if I need to invest in the business, that’s what I want to do. I’m looking at the next few years of really taking on the guys that are all maybe striving for a similar thing nationally in this game. Obviously, what I would like to do next is stay up there with the big boys really.
Parmdeep:
Very good. No doubt you’ll get there. Can I ask you a few questions just a bit more about your lifestyle?
Dave:
Sure.
Parmdeep:
A few people asked me what do the successful people do everyday? How would you describe your day? From working out and what |
do you eat? Do you watch any TV? Do you read any books, magazines, newspapers?
Dave:
When my girlfriend’s back, we get up and we have a nice healthy breakfast to start which I like. Since we’ve come back from Brazil I’ve enjoyed getting up and doing that. We haven’t had many sunny days. So, getting up on a sunny morning and having a relaxed breakfast or go for a run. I’ve got a personal trainer because I’m a bit too lazy to drag myself down to the gym. But I go and see a personal trainer twice a week in the morning. I enjoy having breakfast, going into work. I used to get in at 8:00 AM. Sometimes I do a bit of Internet work really early but I’m happy to get into work sort of 9:00, 9:15 and take it a bit easier now than I used to. Then I work…I work long maybe up to 7:00 or 8:00 at night, sometimes a little bit longer depending on what needs doing. I come back and watch a bit of TV, a little telly. I’m not an avid reader…I read probably a few things like The Economist, The Times and things but I like watching a bit of sci-fi on telly. I even bought myself a stand-up Pacman machine. So, I’ll play a game of that, relax every now and again. I just bought a house with six bedrooms and a cellar. One of the things I’m really keen to get as soon as possible is my lads room downstairs…
Parmdeep:
Oh, wow!
Dave:
...and getting some good games for that… That’s where I enjoy relaxing, have some friends over the weekends and we’ll spend some time in there away from the girls, which will be great.
Parmdeep:
If you want a really good contact for home cinema. There’s a chap who contacted me – he’s one of my book buyers. I’m building houses as well and I’m going to be turning the basement into a home cinema. We’ve done a deal where he’ll do that at cost and if I’ll give him property consulting in return.
Parmdeep:
You should talk to him as well. |
Dave:
…most definitely. Two things I’ve got from you and you’ve just got the phone call tonight, Deep, from me. So, that’s alright. That’s a fair trade…
Parmdeep:
You’re being productive now.
Dave:
Exactly. What else do I do? So, Monday to Friday, to be honest, I mix it up, try to eat good food. I fail when the girlfriend is not around to be honest. I’ll eat anything I can get when I’m starving. I forget to eat during the day, come back and then munch on whatever is freely available. Then I’ll get told off and there’ll be something on the table the next day. Weekends, we spend a lot of time with friends all over the country… We like to spend the whole weekend at home but mostly we’re down to London or over to Manchester and enjoy things. I’m a third owner in a bar in Manchester which is going to be great. It’s in the Northern Corridor.
Parmdeep:
Good.
Dave:
When that gets just done and refurbished, that will be the place to go sort of back-end of the year. So, like I said, do strive to have a good balance that’s one thing I need to do. I probably cut down on the amount of Jack Daniel’s. I’ve done that a bit but I still manage to enjoy myself.
Parmdeep:
I’m very pleased that you managing a good balance because I think that’s really important. As business people, all of us get to a phase in our business where you just think why am I doing this? There’s a reason why I’ve started this, because you’ve been so consumed by the work, you’ve actually forgotten why you started in the first place.
Dave:
Yes, I can see that.
